Lokobe Strict Special Reserve

Lokobe is Nosy Be’s last protected primitive forest, a must-visit destination for Madagascar Eco Travel enthusiasts. It shelters a diverse array of endemic medicinal plants and ancient trees that delight scientists and eco-tourists alike. Navigate through this preserved universe, home to lemurs (Macaco and Lépilémur), reptiles, chameleons, insects, and tropical birds thriving in their natural habitat.

The reserve’s 740 hectares contain the majority of Nosy Be’s endemic vegetation. Visit the quaint hamlet of Ampasipohy, where you can stay in eco-friendly bungalows and accommodations. For a truly insightful experience, we strongly advise being accompanied by a knowledgeable guide.

Nosy Tanikely Marine Park

Nosy Tanikely, a crown jewel of Madagascar Eco Travel, recently gained recognition as a Marine and Coastal Protected Area. Managed by the “Tanihely National Park” association and part of the Madagascar National Parks system, this small island is a hub of marine and land biodiversity. Scientific studies have certified Nosy Tanikely as one of Madagascar’s most crucial marine ecosystems, attracting numerous eco-conscious holidaymakers each year. Activities include sunbathing, diving, snorkeling, picnicking, and trekking towards the island’s summit.

Ankarana National Park

Ankarana National Park, about 90 km south of Antsiranana, covers an area of 182.5 km² and is renowned for its unique limestone karst topography—a result of heavy erosion due to significant rainfall. Known locally as “Tsingy”, which means “the place where one cannot walk barefoot,” this park is a highlight for those on a Madagascar Eco Travel journey, offering a range of trails, breathtaking landscapes, and diverse wildlife.

This park has one of the highest densities of primates globally. Its forests harbor extensive populations of wildlife such as crowned lemurs, Sanford’s brown lemur, Perrier’s black lemur, northern sportive lemur, and the dwarf lemurs, along with the ring-tailed mongoose, fossa, tenrecs, and the Malagasy striped civet. Bird enthusiasts will find nearly 100 species, along with 50 reptile species and the world’s only known cave-living crocodiles.

Ankarafantsika Nature Reserve

Ankarafantsika Nature Reserve stands out as one of Madagascar’s largest parks, a pinnacle of biodiversity and an essential part of any Madagascar Eco Travel itinerary. Located in the Boeny Region, the reserve features a mix of dense dry tropical forest, savannah, scrub, and sandy eroded rock areas, some of which are farmed by the indigenous Sakalava people.

The reserve is a sanctuary for birdlife, attracting many tourists for birdwatching alone, yet there is much more to explore, including 10 species of amphibians and 44 species of reptiles. Mammals like the 8 species of lemur, including two types of mouse lemurs—the world’s smallest primates—and the recently discovered greater big-footed mouse, enhance the reserve’s allure for wildlife enthusiasts.
