Het Lokobe Natuurreservaat, gelegen in het zuidoostelijke deel van het eiland Nosy Be, is een van de laatst overgebleven tropische regenwouden in de regio en is uiterst belangrijk voor de biodiversiteit. Het reservaat beslaat ongeveer 740 hectare en beschermt een breed scala aan unieke plant- en diersoorten die kenmerkend zijn voor Madagaskar. Het heeft een rijke geschiedenis en is nauw verbonden met het behoud van de biodiversiteit in Madagaskar. Lokobe werd opgericht als beschermd gebied om ontbossing tegen te gaan en de inheemse soorten die kenmerkend zijn voor Madagaskar te behouden. Het eiland staat bekend om zijn uitzonderlijke biodiversiteit die nergens anders ter wereld te vinden is.
Lokobe werd in de jaren 1920 officieel uitgeroepen tot natuurreservaat met als doel een van de laatst overgebleven tropische regenwouden op het eiland Nosy Be te beschermen. Tijdens de koloniale periode werden veel gebieden op Madagaskar overgeëxploiteerd, met name voor de landbouw en de houtindustrie. Lokobe werd een belangrijk onderdeel van de inspanningen om deze unieke ecosystemen te behouden, omdat het blootgesteld werd aan het gevaar van ontbossing.
Sinds de oprichting is Lokobe een belangrijk onderdeel geworden van de inspanningen van Madagaskar om het milieu te beschermen en bedreigde diersoorten te beschermen. Het gebied is niet alleen belangrijk voor zijn bosrijkdom, maar ook voor het behoud van zijn unieke flora en fauna, waaronder zeldzame soorten als zwarte lemuren (Eulemur macaco), kameleons en giftige bladstaartgekko’s (Uroplatus). Na de oprichting van het reservaat begonnen de lokale gemeenschappen geleidelijk deel te nemen aan het behoud van de natuurlijke omgeving. Vandaag de dag omvat het reservaat educatieve en duurzaam-toeristische programma’s die ervoor zorgen dat de lokale bevolking een belangrijke rol speelt in de bescherming van dit kostbare erfgoed.
Vandaag de dag is Lokobe een van de meest bezochte natuurgebieden op Nosy Be en Madagaskar en biedt het een uniek inzicht in de rijke biodiversiteit van het eiland. Het reservaat blijft een belangrijk gebied voor ecosysteemonderzoek en ecotoerisme, waar bezoekers uit eerste hand de schoonheid van het regenwoud van Madagaskar kunnen ervaren. Lokobe dient ook als onderzoekscentrum voor biologen en natuurbeschermers die de dier- en plantensoorten in de regio bestuderen.
Vanwege zijn historische en ecologische waarde blijft Lokobe een belangrijke pijler in de inspanningen van Madagaskar om de natuur te behouden.
Wilde dieren :
Lokobe herbergt veel inheemse diersoorten, waaronder de beroemde zwarte lemuren (Eulemur macaco), die bezoekers vaak tegenkomen tijdens hun boswandelingen. Naast lemuren zijn er ook veel soorten reptielen, amfibieën en vogels, waaronder kameleons, gekko’s, kikkers en verschillende zeldzame vogels die elders in de wereld moeilijk te vinden zijn. Interessante soorten zijn onder andere de giftige bladstaartgekko (Uroplatus), die uitzonderlijk goed opgaat in zijn omgeving.
Flora :
Het Lokobe-woud is rijk aan weelderige vegetatie, waaronder loofbomen, palmen, varens en vele soorten orchideeën. Door het tropische klimaat en de hoge luchtvochtigheid ontwikkelt het reservaat weelderige vegetatie die een perfecte habitat vormt voor veel diersoorten.
Activiteiten voor bezoekers :
Een bezoek aan Lokobe is een spannend avontuur voor natuurliefhebbers. Bezoekers kunnen wandelingen maken door het bos, waarbij ze de flora en fauna kunnen observeren. Er zijn ook rondleidingen met lokale gidsen beschikbaar, die het reservaat en zijn bewoners goed kennen. Naast wandelen kunnen er ook kanotochten worden georganiseerd op de omliggende rivieren, wat een uniek inzicht geeft in de wetlands van het reservaat.
Aanbevelingen voor bezoekers :
Omdat je een tropisch woud gaat bezoeken, raden we je aan om lichte wandelschoenen mee te nemen zodat je je gemakkelijker over de bospaden kunt bewegen, en insectenspray om je te beschermen tegen insecten, aangezien de omstandigheden in het regenwoud ideaal zijn voor hun ontwikkeling.

A beautiful little hotel with lovely rooms. Very clean and wonderfully hospitable owners. We had a wonderful time relaxing there after 2.5 days of traveling through Madagascar. It was the only place where I could eat a salad without any worries. The food is delicious and has local and European influences, combined with delicious dips and sauces.

Komba Cabana won our hearts from the moment we arrived, and we felt very comfortable and welcome throughout our stay. The bungalow is stylishly furnished, very clean, and decorated daily with fresh flowers. All the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. There’s a generous breakfast buffet with fresh crepes every day. In the evenings, you can choose between two menus, and the portions are plentiful. The owners were always open to questions and genuinely interested. We hope to return someday.

It’s lovingly built and run by a fantastic family, and from the very first moment you feel completely at home in this vibrant natural paradise. On Nosy Komba there are no cars or tuc-tuc, just peace and quiet. The bungalows are spotlessly clean, with a modern design that blends local materials and thoughtful details. The food is fresh, local, and absolutely delicious, and the service couldn’t be better. From the moment we connected with Komba Cabana, our stay felt exceptionally special. Urska’s immediate and thoughtful email responses ensured all our needs were anticipated even before our arrival. Despite our very late hour, a warm welcome team was there to greet us as we stepped into this truly magical place. Our delicious first dinner was followed by a wonderful chat, setting the perfect tone for planning our adventures.
We stayed in a sea-view bungalow, a serene haven that was immaculately clean and beautifully appointed. Our spacious private terrace, embraced by swaying palm trees, offered wonderful privacy. Inside, the comfortable four-poster bed was a nightly delight, and we loved the thoughtful touch of fresh, beautifully designed sheets in different colors each day. The entire resort feels like a meticulously curated botanical garden – wherever you look, vibrant flowers burst forth, creating a constant connection to nature.
What truly elevates Komba Cabana is the personal touch of its owners. Spela’s genuine warmth ensured our every wish was fulfilled, and our daily chats over the presentation of a new, delicious menu were a highlight. Borut’s expertly organized excursions were seamless and exceptional. Our guides were fantastic, consistently punctual (a rare and appreciated quality!), and fluent in both English and French. Julian, our jungle hiking guide, enriched our trek with fascinating insights into local flora and fauna. Theo led us to incredible fishing spots, where my husband achieved his lifelong dream by catching a massive 91kg black marlin and a sailfish! Laurent’s two dives were among the best we’ve ever experienced, revealing an astonishing array of marine life. After all these thrilling adventures, a relaxing massage was the perfect indulgence.
Throughout our stay, the entire Komba Cabana team radiated genuine sweetness and welcome, always greeting us with smiles and politeness. Leaving this fantastic place was genuinely difficult. Everything, from the personalized service to the stunning natural surroundings and thrilling activities, was simply perfect. We are already counting the days until our return!

We stayed here three days me and my girlfriend. The island is an authentic pearl immersed in the wildest and most lush jungle. A few meters away there is a discreet coral reef where you can see many sea turtles pass daily, some even giants! The hospitality of the owners of the structure (beautiful and immersed in the jungle) is unique. Thanks to their professionalism and customer care they will make your experience truly unforgettable. We left there really with tears for how well we were treated. We left a piece of heart to Nosy Komba.

We arrived in Komba Cabana from Nosy Be and the difference was night and day. Private pick up arranged and the warmest of welcomes straight off the boat, greeted by the family and the team with waves, music, tropical flower necklaces and big big smiles. The place has been immaculately blended into the jungle island paradise. Luxurious private villas, refined landscaping and a touch of their history at every turn. The hosts and their kids have created a haven of beauty with unimaginable effort that will last for a lifetime or 2 ……

Where to begin with reviewing this beautiful resort. We came here for our honeymoon and it’s safe to say we felt we entered paradise. Spela (the owner), her son and the staff are incredibly welcoming. They really take care of you and you can feel how much effort goes into giving back to the island and its community.
The lodges were beautiful and allowed you to fully embrace island living. The gardens are one of a kind and the food is all based on the local cuisine, making your Malagasy experience all the more authentic.
We stayed here for six nights and had support booking all of our excursions and travel to and from the airport. Also important to note, the excursions were with local guides that the lodge has built relationships with, you can really feel everyone is working their best to give you a peak Madagascar experience. We cannot recommend a stay here enough ❤️

We were sprach less. The highlight of our trip to Madagascar. After our trip from Sakalava to Nosy Be, Komba Cabana was the best, perfect and most welcoming happy ending.
The lodge is designed wonderfully with such a good taste and lot of beautiful details with shells.
The food is incredible, home-made and freshly prepared, they even had a lot of delicious things for my vegan sister. The location is magical. Nosy Komba is beautiful. The view is incredible and from the beach on the big rocks you have one of the best sunsets you will experience in Madagascar. We went diving as well so we had lots of things to do and lovely activities and nature to explore. 🐢🐠🤿
And finally, the hosting family, is so welcoming and friendly, we felt like home over there. Their warm hospitality is unforgettable, we talked for ages and it was so wonderful to share all the story’s and memories altogether, one of the most beautiful places in Madagascar!
